And while this is justifiable in Wiesels situation, this scene still demonstrates exactly what becomes of a person when they are unable to express their opinions or feelings at all. The only two options for Holocaust victims seems to be evident in all of these examples: keep quiet or die.This is reflected in the novel not only in Wiesels struggles but also in the lives of the entire oppressed Jewish race. The Nazis forced these innocent people into these camps where they were slaughtered without cause. One of the first images Wiesel witnesses at Birkenau leaves a scar that is representative of this idea of victims without reason: the image of babies being burned alive. How could it be possible for [the Nazis] to burn people, children, and for the world to keep silent? It was a nightmare (41). Wiesel seems to speak not just for himself here, but for the whole of the human race. The Jewish people were forced into a life that they had done nothing to deserve. Everything was taken from them, possessions (43-44), family (38-39), and even their lives. Six million people were silenced and these poor souls could do nothing more than stand by, watch, and pray that it did not happen to them.Occasionally, of course, there was an example of the brighter side of humanity shining through, as is evidenced by Wiesels friend, Juliek, who manages to hide his violin from the Nazis even until his death (100). He played a fragment from Beethovens concerto, which he had been ordered not to (100, 57). Here is an example of one man who broke the silence that the Nazis had perpetrated upon him. They had attempted to silence the music that Juliek wished to play, saying, Jews [are] not allowed to play German music (57). However, Juliek held onto his very last possession to the bitter end. His violin is perhaps the most significant example of defiance towards the Nazis in the entire novel simply because he plays it pr oudly and publicly in open rebellion. But, unfortunately, this kind of behavior is not typical of the Jewish people in Night.Instead, they turn upon one another, in effect actually helping the Nazis with their campaign. One of the first examples occurs when Madame Schachter refuses to keep quite on the train and some of the young men [force] her to sit down, [tie] her up, and put a gag in her mouth (34). The other Jews cannot stand her incessant ranting about fire and desire nothing more than silence. This actually provides an allusion to the earlier point of silence being connected with nighttime. These exhausted Jews, who still have no idea what they are in for, wish for nothing more than to be able to pass the night away quietly on the train, which has temporarily become their sanctuary. In this situation, silence is actually preferable.Another example of the Jews betraying one another occurs in a slightly different form when Wiesel witnesses the hanging of a fellow Jew. Ten thou sand prisoners watch without a sound. A Nazi commander orders them to bare their heads as a sign of respect. All ten thousand do as they are told and then file past the deceased without so much as a word. Wiesels only comment in regards to this is that he found the soup excellent that evening (70). This clearly demonstrates what is already happening to the Jewish victims at this point in the book; they have lost their true sense of mourning, even silently, and now place more value on food than the death of a man they knew. Silent last respects take on an ironic tone simply because these tortured people no longer seem capable of showing true remorse. In this way, the Jews are actually helping to kill their own because they are unable to even respect another after his death.Another brief example of this occurs when Akiba Drummer is condemned to die and he asks Wiesel and others to Say the Kaddish for [him] (83). They promise but eventually forget when the time comes. In this way, Wies el reflects the terrible nature that had overtaken him and his people: prayers were no longer said for the deceased; they were simply forgotten. Human beings were no longer respected enough to remember. Silence, in this case spiritually, had become a way of life not just for Wiesel but for all the Jews in the concentration camps.One last example of this communal form of silence takes place during the snowy run from Auschwitz to Gleiwitz. The Jews are given a brief reprieve at one point and Wiesel takes the opportunity to lay down in the snow with his father. And as much as he wishes to die, something within [him] revolted against death (95). He refuses to end up like the others Jews surrounding him: All around me death was moving in, silently, without violence. It would seize upon some sleeping being, enter into him, and consume him bit by bit (95). This was the true nature of the Holocaust death; Jews had lost their ability to fight. There was no kicking or screaming; death simply took these sad fragments of people while they slept. In a way, this seems fitting to the rest of the Jewish experience in the camps. These innocents had almost subconsciously learned to suffer in silence, and when the final reckoning came they met it in silence as well. The Jewish spirit had been crushed on that death march, and it was sadly appropriate that so many should meet their end in the same way that they had been forced to live: in silence.But, the story of Night is not completely devoid of any hope. The few true signs of breaking the silence in this terrible situation come in the form of religious belief. Wiesel is certainly not the shining example of eternal loyalty to God that the beginning of the narrative implies he might be. However, his struggle with God, manifested both in his relationship with others and internally, is certainly a worthy effort. The first example of this valiant, yet often times silent, fight occurs during Wiesels first night in the camp when he sp eaks of never being able to shake the memory of what had happened to him and his people. Never shall I forget that nocturnal silence which deprived me, for all eternity, of the desire to live. Never shall I forget those moments which murdered my God and my soul and turned my dreams to dust. Never shall I forget those things, even if I am condemned to live as long as God Himself. Never (43). Here can be seen Wiesels first true break from his faith. He has changed so rapidly from a boy who believed profoundly (14) in the opening of the narrative to a broken man that actually watches his faith die before him. He also makes note of the nocturnal silence in the aforementioned passage. This is significant because it once again draws the reader back to this idea of night being a silent time. The world is supposed to be peacefully at rest. However, in Wiesels world, silence means nothing more than death; and in this case it is the death of God.Another instance of Wiesel watching God be murd ered occurs when the Nazis hang three prisoners, one of them a boy. As the other prisoners pass by, Wiesel hears a man ask aloud where God is in this situation. Wiesel responds silently to himself: Where is He? Here He is He is hanging on this gallows (72). This passage speaks volumes not only about Wiesels own struggles, but also about the actual role that God plays in the Holocaust. Wiesel has reached a point where he is no longer able to believe in the goodness and justice of God. He never states that he no longer believes completely. In fact, this is very significant to his journey later. However, for now, Wiesel simply denies that God could possibly care about the Jews, His chosen people. This raises the interesting topic of religious silence, this time from the perspective of God. The Almighty is seemingly silent during the entire ordeal that Wiesel and others like him faced. If nothing else, it is not hard to sympathize with and understand why Wiesel found it impossible to r etain his faith in this situation.However, his faith actually seems stronger than he might be willing to admit. An interesting example of this occurs on Yom Kippur when Wiesel decides not to fast in order to defy God. I no longer accepted Gods silence. As I swallowed my bowl of soup, I saw in the gesture an act of rebellion and protest against Him (76). Again, Wiesel makes mention of the fact that God is silent. He never claims that God is completely dead or that his faith is shattered totally. Even when the young boy died on the gallows, Wiesel seemed to only be declaring his faith in God dead, and not God Himself. This is significant because Wiesel specifically says that he no longer accepts Gods silence, and yet that statement implies that he does have some faith in God left simply because he acknowledges His existence. Wiesel may have become silent in his relationship towards the Creator but, as can be seen in previous examples, silence does not necessarily mean complete detachm ent. God is seemingly silent towards Wiesel and his fellow prisoners, so Wiesel is silent right back. This is probably the lowest point that Wiesel reaches in the entire novel. After this outright act of defiance, the reader is able to see an example of a slight change of heart for Wiesel.This occurs during the death march when Wiesel realizes that Rabbi Eliahous son had left his own father behind to die in the snow. This arouses something unexpected in Wiesel: And, in spite of myself, a prayer rose in my heart, to that God in whom I no longer believed. My God, Lord of the Universe, give me strength never to do what Rabbi Eliahous son has done (97). This scene is hugely important because it marks a breaking of the silence for Wiesel. He prays, in spite of himself, to God. This, of course, does not mean that Wiesel is once again going to become the truth seeking, weeping for the oppressed student of the Torah that he once was. However, it does seem to be an encouraging step in the ri ght direction. But, like much that is good in Night, it does not last too long.Wiesels father soon dies, as was mentioned earlier, and Wiesel simply lives out his remaining time in his new concentration camp in relative silence. In fact, the remaining few pages of the novel after the death of Wiesels father have no dialogue of any kind. It is almost as if Wiesel is saying that his only reason for still communicating with the rest of humanity died with his father. His life is now nothing more than a silent waiting game. And when he finally is freed at the end of the novel, he spends a couple weeks in a hospital between life and death (119). He eventually gathers his strength and looks at himself in the mirror, describing himself simply as a corpse (119). Here, even in the last few sentences, Wiesel seems to wallow in this idea of silence. He wavers between this world and the next, and one cannot help but wonder if he really wants to go on living or not. Would it not be so much simple r to just pass away into eternal silence rather than face the cruel reality of this world? Wiesel does not seem so sure either way. And the image of a corpse only furthers this idea of the living death, which seemed to pervade the entire novel. Wiesel is not necessarily better off than he was before. Now, he has lost everything including his father and he has only his painfully quiet world of bitter memories to live in.This seems as if it would be the logical place for God to enter the picture. Wiesel was obviously showing some interest, however slight, in rekindling his faith. But as the novel ends, there is no sign of God. There is no grand justification or succinct explanation. There is no burial for the lost or peace for the survivors. God has evidently abandoned his people. The world stood by quietly while six million people were murdered. Wiesel has witnessed this horrible silence in others and in himself. He has lost all that was precious to him. And the only solace that hi s readers can find is that he had the courage to write about his suffering, his silence. He may have seen all that was good and just vanish before his eyes, but he somehow retains the will to tell others about his experiences. In this way, and for what it is worth, Wiesel has managed to break his silence.

The whole book itself, revolves around the issue of either being sane or not. We are met with the thought of whether the narrator themselves are sane. But when it comes to our world today, we must ask ourselves how can we define someone as insane or sane? If if we can, who should be in charge of saying that they are? The first character that we are introduced to, is Bromden, or â€Å"Chief Bromden,† throughout the story we see him telling the story of how he see’s the ward and other patients, but even though we never find out the exact reason as to why he is in the mental hospital, we do see his story in small glimpses throughout the book. When we first meet Bromden, we see that he is very shy and timid. People at the ward have even mistaken him as being deaf and mute. While he is not, he chooses to pretend as if he is, because it is much easier to hide and not be seen this way. Because he is deaf and mute, he is mistaken as being mentally ill. While we never find out how he got to the hospital or why, we do know that he has chosen to conform to being in the hospital. His means the attractions between amino acid molecules in the enzyme will break and the enzyme will lose its shape. The active site of the enzyme changes so it can not break down hydrogen peroxide. As the temperature rises further the catalase will denature more quickly and the rate of reaction will fall further.A graph of rate of reaction against temperature may look like this.The rise of rate of reaction is governed by the Q10 coefficient, which states that a 10?C rise will result in an approximate double of the rate of reaction.MethodPreliminary work was undertaken to determine the amount of hydrogen peroxide and potato to use, and what temperature differences to use. So 2cm of potato was used with of hydrogen peroxide. There will not be enough time for all the experiments to be left for five minutes. So they will be left for four minutes, leaving enough time to complete all experiments.Pour 3cm3 of hydrogen peroxide into a test tube, place this in a water bath of 20?C to warm up. Use a cork borer to retrieve a strip of potato from a potato, cut this to 2cm using a cutting board and a knife. Pour water into a beaker and place and measuring cylinder, full of water, into it, as shown below. Take care not to allow air into the cylinder. Place the end of a delivery tube into the measuring cylinder as shown below. Place the potato on the side of the test tube and close it with the bung of the delivery tube. Allow the potato to drop into the hydrogen peroxide, which should be the temperature of the water bath, and start a timer.Set up of equipmentAs oxygen is produced in the reaction it will displace the air trapped in the test tube, this will be forc ed through the delivery tube into the measuring cylinder. The air will rise to the top as the measuring cylinder is full of water and its volume can be measured. Take readings of gas produced every 30 seconds for four minutes.Repeat the experiment twice for reliability and verification of results. Conduct similar experiments with water bath temperatures of 10?C, 30?C, 40?C, 50?C, 60?C and 70?C. In each case make sure the temperature of the substrate has reached the temperature of the water bath before adding the potato.Other methods which can be used are counting the number of bubbles produced, this would not be accurate as the bubble sizes are not the same and the volume is not measured. Measuring the mass of the gas lost is a better method as readings on the scale will be accurate, however this would require equipment which is not available.To make the test fair all other factors affecting the rate of reaction must be kept constant. This includes surface area of the potato and the concentration of the hydrogen peroxide. The experiment will be kept a fair test by:? Using the same length of potato, to keep the surface area constant,? Using the same volume of hydrogen peroxide,? Washing the test tube out with water and drying it, this will prevent concentration changes in hydrogen peroxide,? Using the same potato, as different potatoes will have different levels of catalase present,? Using the same concentration of hydrogen peroxide,? Using the same cork borer to cut the potato, to keep the surface area constant.The experiment will be safe by:? Always wearing safety goggles, as hydrogen peroxide an damage your eyes,? Not spilling the hydrogen peroxide as it is an irritant, and bleaches,? Taking care when cutting the potato,? The rate of reaction can be found by dividing the gas produced by the time. This has been done in the results.From the graph of temperature against rate of reaction we can see the highest rate of reaction, of 0.013 /s, occurs at 40?C. The rate is slow, 0.00125 /s, at 10?C it then rises with temperature until it reaches its maximum at 40?C. This happens because at low temperatures the hydrogen peroxide has less energy a moves more slowly. It will collide with the catalase less often, meaning the frequency of collisions is low. They are less likely to have the right activation energy so there are less collisions resulting in reactions. This will mean the rate of reaction will be low. At higher temperatures the hydrogen peroxide has enough energy to reach its activation energy and it is also colliding more often, so the rate of reaction will be higher.After 40?C the rate of reaction falls , this is because the catalase begins to denature. When enzymes denature the attractions between amino acids in the enzyme break and the enzyme begins to return to its original shape. The shape of the active site also changes so it cannot break down the hydrogen peroxide.The rise in rate of reaction between 10?C and 40?C complies with the Q10 coefficient, as a 10?C rise causes the rate of reaction to approximately double. This can be shown by dividing the higher rate of reaction by the lower one. For example dividing the rate of reaction at 20?C by the rate of reaction at 10?C should give a figure close to 2.These figures are all close to 2, they will not be exact because Q10 is only an approximate and the results are not perfect .From the table of results showing the average volume of gas produced every 30 seconds we can see that at 50?C the enzymes denature within 2 minutes, as gas is no longer produced. This happens because the enzyme takes time to heat up, while it is still reacting with the substrate. Once it is heated to the temperature of the hydrogen peroxide not all the enzymes are denatured. At 60?C the potato is heated faster and it takes 90 seconds for the enzymes to denature, at 70?C the potato is heated even faster and it takes 30 seconds to denature.The results agree with my hypothesis because I have predicted that the rate of reaction will rise between 10?C and 40?C, and the rate will fall after 40?C. The graph obtained for the results is also similar to the one predicted, and the results seem to follow as predicted.From conducting the experiment and gathering data I can conclude that the rate of reaction between catalase and hydrogen peroxide rises as the temperature of the mixture rises. Th is happens until 40?C, after which the rate of reaction falls because the catalase begins to denature. When enzyme denature attractions between the amino acids break so the enzymes loses its shape. The active site will no longer have its unique shape and the enzyme will be unable to react with its substrate.This is because only the right active site shape can break down hydrogen peroxide, according to the lock and key hypothesis, which suggests the substrate, like a key, will only have one lock, enzyme, it fits into. The reaction follows Q10 until 40?C, because a 10?C rise will give enough energy to the substrate to increase the number of collisions and give more molecules the right activation energy to react when the collide. This will double the rate of reaction.Two anomalous results occurred during the experiment.1. During the repeat reading of the experiment at 10?C the reading at 90 seconds is higher than that of 120 seconds. This does not affect the analysis as the reading was ignored when taking averages.2. During the 50?C experiment the first time the volume of gas produced stopped increasing between 120 and 180 seconds. Gas was then released, it may have been trapped in the delivery tube. When drawing the best fit line this was taken into account, so it shouldnt affect the analysis.EvaluationThe experiment was conducted successfully, the results obtained indicates a clear pattern which can be used to draw and support a valid conclusion. The experiment could not be conducted as planned because there was not enough time to repeat each experiment twice. However, one repetition was conducted which did make the results more reliable.The results are reliable because the experiment was a fair test. This was done by keeping all variables constant. The concentration of hydrogen peroxide was not changed, however, it did vary as it naturally decomposed into water and oxygen. It also decomposed more during the higher temperature experiments because the hydrogen p eroxide had more energy. This was a slight change and could not vary the volume of the gas produced significantly. The same volume oh hydrogen peroxide was used. The surface area of the potato was kept constant by using the same size cork borer and cutting it to the same size.The results are accurate because a narrow measuring cylinder was used, so the volume measured is more accurate. Hot and cold water were mixed to achieve accurate temperatures.An anomalous results occurred during the repeat reading of the 10?C experiment, the reading at 90 seconds is higher than that at 120 seconds. This reading was ignored when taking the average so It does not affect the analysis. It occurred because the measurement was misread, it may have been 0.1 cm3, instead of 0.2 cm3. Another anomalous result occurred during the first taking of the 50?C experiment, gas was released at 210 seconds when the experiment seemed to have stopped. The gas may have been trapped in the delivery tube and should hav e been released earlier in the experiment. This was taken into account when drawing the best fit line on the graph, so does not affect the analysis.The method used was good enough to achieve reliable readings , but it can be improved by measuring the mass of the gas lost, this would be more accurate as digital readings would be taken. Using a smaller frequency and a larger range of temperatures would give more evidence for the conclusion. However would require more time and equipment.Other improvements are, using thinner measuring cylinders, to measure out the hydrogen peroxide and the gas produced. Using a thermocouple thermometer to accurately measure the temperature. The hydrogen peroxide took time to heat up as the test tube is glass and is insulated. Using a better material would save time and would have allowed the plan to be completed. Using electronic equipment to take readings a exactly 30 seconds, would eliminate human error.Further work that would extend the investigation and give more evidence to the conclusion would be, to use different concentrations of hydrogen peroxide and lengths of potato, to see how these affect the rate of reaction. Using other substances with catalase, like liver, to see how enzyme concentration affects the rate.
